Karachi Port handles ultra-large container vessel MSC Mirjam

KARACHI: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has successfully berthed MSC Mirjam, one of the world’s largest container vessels, reinforcing the port’s ability to accommodate ultra-large container ships and strengthening its position in regional maritime trade.

The vessel arrived at Karachi Port on July 27 with a pilot onboard at 11:00am and was berthed at SAPT-2 at 12:00pm. Measuring 400 metres in length with a beam of 58.8 metres, MSC Mirjam has a gross tonnage of 193,000, a carrying capacity of 19,500 TEUs and a draught of 14.2 metres. Around 1,500 container movements are expected during its stay before it sails for its next destination, Salalah, Oman.

KPT said the successful handling of the mega container ship reflects the port’s capability to receive ultra-large vessels on a regular basis and underscores the confidence that leading international shipping lines continue to place in Karachi Port.

The port authority credited the achievement to the professionalism and expertise of its marine pilots and operational staff, whose coordinated efforts ensured the vessel’s safe berthing and efficient handling.

According to KPT, the arrival of MSC Mirjam marks another milestone for the port and highlights its growing role in facilitating global maritime trade while supporting Pakistan’s import and export supply chain.
